২৯ এপ্রিল ২০২৪ এইড ফাউন্ডেশনের নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশ তামাক বিরোধী জোটের একটি প্রতিনিধিদলের সাথে মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্য জনাব জনাব রাশেদ খান মেনন এর একটি দ্বিপাক্ষিক সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এইড ফাউন্ডেশন ও তামাক বিরোধী জোটের পক্ষ থেকে মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্যকে তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণ আইন সংশোধন এবং আসন্ন বাজেটে তামাকের উপর উচ্চহারে কর নির্ধারনের একটি প্রস্তাবনা উপস্থাপন করা হয়। মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্য প্রতিনিধি দলের সাথে একমত পোষণ করে বলেন, সিঙ্গেল ষ্টিক বিক্রি নিষিদ্ধ করতে পারলে সিগারেটের ব্যবহার অনেকাংশে কমিয়ে আনা সম্ভব। তিনি প্রতিশ্রুতি ব্যক্ত করে বলেন, সংসদে এই আইন সংশোধনের প্রস্তাবনার পক্ষে এবং আসন্ন বাজেট অধিবেশনে তামাকের উপর সুনির্দিষ্ট কর প্রস্তাবনার বিষয়ে তিনি কথা বলবেন। তিনি আরো বলেন, মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর “২০৪০ সালের মধ্যে তামাকমুক্ত বাংলাদেশ গড়া”র ঘোষণা বাস্তবায়নে আমরা অঙ্গিকারবদ্ধ। মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্য এইড ফাউন্ডেশনের তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণ কার্যক্রমে ধারাবাহিক ভূমিকা রাখায় ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করে বলেন, আগামীতে যেকোন ধরণের সহযোগিতার প্রয়োজন হলে তিনি সেটা করবেন। আলোচনায় উপস্থিত ছিলেন, এইড ফাউন্ডেশনের প্রকল্প পরিচালক শাগুফতা সুলতানা, সিনিয়র প্রোগাম অফিসার আবু নাসের অনীক, প্রশাসনিক কর্মকর্তা নাসরিন সুলতানা, ডাব্লিউবিবি ট্রাস্টের কর্মসূচি প্রধান সৈয়দা অনন্যা রহমান, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বুরো অফ ইকোনোমিক্সের কর্মসূচি ব্যবস্থাপক জনাব হামিদুল ইসলাম হিল্লোল এবং মানস এর কর্মকর্তা জনাব আবু রায়হান।
Anti-Tobacco Alliance held bilateral meeting led by AID Foundation with Honorable Member of Parliament Mr. Rashed Khan Menon
On 29 April 2024, a bilateral meeting was held with a delegation of Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance led by AID Foundation, Mr. Rashed Khan Menon, Member of Parliament. AID Foundation and Anti-Tobacco Alliance presented a proposal to the Honorable Member of Parliament to amend the Tobacco Control Act and impose higher taxes on tobacco in the upcoming budget. The Honorable Member of Parliament agreed with the delegation and said that if the sale of single sticks is banned, it is possible to reduce the consumption of cigarettes to a large extent. He promised that he would speak in favor of the proposal to amend this law in Parliament and the specific tax proposal on tobacco in the upcoming budget session. He also said that we are committed to implement the announcement of the Honorable Prime Minister "to create a tobacco-free Bangladesh by 2040". The Honorable Member of Parliament thanked AID Foundation and Anti-Tobacco Alliance for its consistent role in tobacco control activities and said that if any kind of cooperation is needed in the future, he will do so. AID Foundation Project Director Shagufta Sultana, Senior Program Officer Abu Naser Anik, Administrative Officer Nasrin Sultana, WBB Trust Program Head Syeda Anannya Rahman, Dhaka University Bureau of Economics Program Manager Mr. Hamidul Islam Hillol and MANAS Officer Mr. Abu Raihan were present in the discussion.
